Thank you so much for your speedy response to my request for assistance to Mr. L.M. last week when it became very cold. He is an elderly gentleman and, because of medication, the elderly are often very cold. Being without heat for 24 hours would have been more problematic for him than for some of our other citizens.
Shreve McGonegal has been servicing Northern Virginia for over 107 years and is committed to our customers and supportive of our technicians. We maintain a safe work environment & therefore all candidates must pass a drug test, background and driving license check. I have always used and continue to use Shreve/McGonegal for all my plumbing needs and I have never considered using anyone else. Why would I use anyone else when they're the BEST! I usually request Hai because I love his work.takes care of the problem and never leaves a mess as he's very neat. Bottom line is he takes pride in what he does and it's obvious he loves his work!

The electrician installed a new circuit in my laundry room. He did a professional job and informed me in advance about the work procedure. He asked me for my feedback before he started the work. I am very pleased with the outcome. I definitely would choice again Shreve/McGonegal for home repair or installation.

I called a month ago about fixing a toilet that did not flush and about installing new bathroom plumbing in my basement remodel. Shreve did not do either of these jobs correctly. 1. They sent a young man who said he was not qualified to take on the installation job but that he would arranged to send someone else. I waited for 2 weeks and eventually found another plumber. 2.

He did fix my toilet but the repair only lasted a week. He did not want to replace a part that we both suspected was faulty, stating that Toto toilets are difficult to service, and stated that mine had less clearance in back than most. I called a plumber from another company who disassembled the tank, replaced the defective part and it now works fine. 3. Shreve botched both items by sending out an inexperienced technician who was not qualified or willing to deal with my requests.

The staff that answers calls do not listen to what the customer says they need. 4. I will close with another example that happened a few years ago. We have a 90 year old house with hot water radiators and boiler that needed a routine service checkup. I asked Shreve to send someone experienced with such old systems, since I know that not everyone is comfortable with them.

I watched as the plumber opened and closed many valves. When he was done, I remember asking if it was all put back to its original state. I was assured that it was, but evidently not. A few hours later we heard an explosion from the basement and found water pouring on the floor at a rapid rate. We shut everything down and called Shreve. One of the valves that should have been open was left closed, pressure built up and a section blew apart.

When the technician returned, he repaired the damage, with no apology. I asked how often he works on such old systems. He said that in his younger days he encountered them now and then, but rarely these days. I knew to ask for someone with experience servicing old installations. Not clear if he was. 5. We have not used Shreve for almost 10 years after this incident. We decided to give them another try recently but given their poor performance outlined above, we will look elsewhere for plumbers.

I noticed that our hot water wasn't as hot as it used to be and it ran out quickly. I figured that it was time to replace. I called Shreve and they were out within a couple of hours and determined the burner needed a good cleaning and it would be back to normal. They cleaned it and did a thorough check and we are good to go. They saved me from having to replace the whole thing. They continue to be my only "go to" for all my plumbing and HVAC needs!

I rarely take the time to leave bad reviews, but this company is pretty much the worst. I cannot review their services because they never came to my house. I called on a Friday morning to see if they had a plumber available and they said they would come to my house that "afternoon" and that they would call before they came. I waited at home all afternoon; by 4pm, when I hadn't heard anything, I called them to find out if they were still coming.

They assured me that the plumber had gotten held up but would be there shortly. Needless to say, no one ever showed and I didn't get so much as a call of apology, despite leaving them multiple voicemails. I can only conclude that they don't value their customers' time.

Hai was great. We had him out twice in two weeks for different issues and he resolved them both with a minimum of fuss. He even suggested, and installed, some extra offcuts of wood under our dishwasher to resolve a difficulty in pulling it out for any future work. Above and beyond. Plus, he's just a great guy. Will definitely use Shreve/McGonegal in future, and ask for Hai specifically.

In one word - Horrible. I called last week and was told they could make Tuesday afternoon work. They gave me a window of 12-5pm which should've been my first red flag. I asked if they could be a bit more specific and they told me the plumber would call the day of and give me a smaller window. I waited and waited and heard nothing, so around 2pm I gave them a call.

I was told that I was still on the schedule on the plumber would be there sometime before 5pm - I said that's fine as long as he can be there and have enough time to do the job. I left work early to be home by 4pm only to still have no plumber. At 5pm, I got a call from them telling me the plumber was delayed but would it be ok if he could arrive in the next hour or 90 minutes.

At this point I just wanted the job done so I agreed. I was told I'd even receive a $50 discount for my hassle. The plumber eventually showed up at 7pm (later than I was told). He looked at the job and seemed annoyed - he told me he was told it was a simply swapping out of a water line and not a new install. He said he would have to call his supervisor.

He came back 10 minutes later and told me the job was too big to do tonight and they would have to reschedule. I could only laugh at the complete incompetence of this company.

I need a plumber I could trust so I went with a recommendation from my family from years earlier. The technician showed up on time, took care of a laundry faucet that hadn't been used in years (too fearful to see how much!) with such ease and far less than I ever expected in cost! He also took care of replacing a leaking pipe and then finished up with magically taking care of a backed-up bathtub drain. My money was well spent and my fears of calling a plumber definitely relieved! Thank you! Copy and Paste Your Review To :

I had a very slow draining bathtub and original 60-year old plumbing. Willie from Shreve McGonegal was great. He was on time. Knowledgable. He walked me through the options step by step during the project. And he got the tough job done. The old plumbing design made it very difficult (maybe impossible) to snake past the trap pipe. Willie predicted it and, unfortunately for him, he was right - the first snake try didn't work.

The next step was for him to go under the house into the wet crawl space, cut the trap out, replace it, and then re-try snaking it. He did it all. It was great to watch a professional do a fantastic job under very tough conditions. Thank you, Willie! And I couldn't more highly recommend Shreve McGonegal after this experience. Oh. and the drain has never worked better.

POSITIVES: When we called on a Friday for a main line blockage issue, a plumber was able to come out that day. The plumber who was sent out was very nice. NEGATIVES: PRICE -- Be Careful! Our new (to us) home had a main line blockage issue. (We Googled it-- the plumber confirmed it.) Shreve & Sons wanted $575 to clear the blockage. Our home warranty company stated that the job should not exceed $200.

Since we were not willing to be $375 out of pocket, we (thankfully) declined. Unfortunately, we still paid $50 for the 5 minute visit. (Random- They don't/didn't take credit for payment--just cash or check. Stone Age.) While we were waiting for our home warranty company to send one of their contractors out, we continued to Google solutions.

At Home Depot, we spend $20 on a drain bladder. The drain bladder resolved our issue in 5 MINUTES! Thankfully, we only had a soft blockage AND we didn't panic and pay $575 for a $20 fix.

I have used these folks a few times now over the last year, both for HVAC and plumbing. They have been terrific. Easy to schedule, they show up when they say they will and the work has been excellent. We've had the very early am appointments and I've had appointments in a window--no problems on any visits. I had a tricky bath tub faucet and when I finally called for the follow up visit several months later (my delay not theirs) they still had the part from the initial visit ready to go. Highly recommend. Tsegaye is terrific

We had these guys checked our heating and cooling system and we were really impressed. They really did a good job in detecting and replacing all the parts that were not working and gave us a good pricing. They really do know how to give a good customer service!

About three months ago, in an attempt to buy local we went to S/M to buy just a shower head that connects to the end of the shower hose. $75 later I installed it. It installed OK but the water pattern was poor, not due to our water pressure. We were told at purchase it could not be returned for any reason. Today I was adjusting the water pattern and two parts popped out of the head making it useless. Took it back to S/M and they claimed it was my fault - offered NO recourse. Not so much as a small discount to get a replacement head. Not customer service oriented at all. Will I ever use S/M for anything. NEVER! BEWARE SHOP AT YOUR OWN RISK!

The plumber that repaired the pipes in our house was really polite and very professional. He did an amazing job in detecting and fixing all the leaking pipes in our home. Also they gave us a great package for the service. It was really a great experience for us.

I had them repair several pipes in the house and the quality of the work done was really impressive. They made sure and checked all the pipes in the house and even gave me a reasonable package for the service.

I would give them zero stars. I made an appointment 2 days ago for a plumber. They said he would be here between 12-5. When he had not arrived - nor had anyone called me by 4:00, I called them. The plumber said he would be here in 30 mins - which I doubted because of the traffic. This place is unorganized and not at all customer friendly.

The plumbing crew really did an exceptional job. They completed the work on time and even went the extra mile in checking all my pipes to see if there were any leaks left. Their service crew really showed the true meaning of customer service!

The Good: The electrician was friendly, knowledgeable and worked at a good pace. the Bad: The office person who made the appt wrote my number down wrong, so the electrician came an hour later than expected. There is also a $50 dispatch fee and the service person who comes to your door is supposed to give an estimate. The guy never gave an estimate, and I trusted it would be reasonable since they are on Angie's list. the Ugly: They charge $50 per quarter hour -- that's $200/hour folks!

The lady who tries to make your appt is a complete liar when she says they do not have an hourly rate. Even the manager I spoke with, completely professionally dead. Overall: It's a shame their front office folks seem like scammers when their technicians are good. Would never call these people again. Ever.

We used Shreve/McGonegal to fix a basement sink that wouldn't drain. Making an appointment was super easy, and even though our problem was by no means an emergency, they gave us an appointment early the next morning-early enough that we didn't even have to take time off from work. The plumber who came out was knowledgeable, worked quickly, fixed the problem and even improved our pipes by eliminating a sharp curve that lead to sediment collecting. We'd use this company again in a heartbeat.

This is a review for Shreve/McGonegal's parts department, not having the plumber come to your home. Parts and service is open till 3:00 on Saturday. You bring them the broken plumbing fixture, Shreve has got the spare. I am not making this up. They have everything -- and it comes with advice how to take out the old part and install the new part. The guy who was there this past Saturday was terrific -- and good humored explaining plumbing 101 to a non-plumber.
