San Juan Timberwrights uses reclaimed timber and unique craftsmanship to create green, sustainable timber frame homes that are energy efficient and built to last. All of our timber frame construction projects use true mortise-and-tenon joints cut at one of our shops. We have two locations, in Arboles (near Durango) and in Norwood (near Telluride), that allow us to service clients throughout the Southwest.
Services
After 20 years of working in traditional construction and engineering, Mike McDowell and Doug Wakefield formed San Juan Timberwrights, a timber frame construction company, which since 1986, has been building artisan-quality timber frames for discriminating homeowners and their contractors and architects.
Timber frame construction blends age-old building techniques and modern technology to create joinery that connects posts and beams. The timber is cut by hand in our shop and assembled on location. The wood we prefer to use is salvaged reclaimed timber, mostly dry, aged Douglas fir, from old buildings that have been dismantled.
The kitchens in these photos feature many different styles from country to modern. Many of them are open to the dining area or great room and include a bar style eating area. The cabinets in several of these kitchens were done by Frank Weis, San Juan Woodworks, who works out of our shop in Arboles and frequently uses reclaimed Douglas Fir in his projects.
After building sustainable, green timber frame homes for 25-years, we're making the most of limited resources and space and expanding into small and tiny home design. San Juan Timberwrights' Tiny Timberframe Kits are made from the same reclaimed wood and quality construction as our full-size timber frames but in a smaller size that you assemble at your location.

These guys are awesome! Every high end contractor in town knows this place, the best kept secret in Durango. If you're looking for vintage reclaimed timber, make the drive and walk the yard, this stuff is massive and beautiful. We were in a time crunch to produce some sort of unique vintage post for the kitchen in the cabin we're building. Doug drove us out to his home to see some of the amazing things he has built.

We wanted something with a lot of Character, weathered, very rough, like it had come out of an old mine shaft. A few days later we had an amazing gnarly looking old 10 square post that had been cut, gravel aged, burned and then brush sanded. It looks excellent with our 90yr old reclaimed cedar floors and we can't wait to hang some antique lanterns and stuff on it.

We're not big money, needed just one post (for now) but we were treated like they were building us a house, the customer service and friendship was outstanding. We're creating other things for these guys to do on our jobsite, that's how much we like this company. If you need vintage reclaimed timber, get off your butt, get in the truck and roll, it's worth the drive.
